Role of magnetic circular dichroism in all-optical magnetic recording.

چکیده
Using magneto-optical microscopy in combination with ellipsometry measurements, we show that all-optical switching with polarized femtosecond laser pulses in ferrimagnetic GdFeCo is subjected to a threshold fluence absorbed in the magnetic layer, independent of either the excitation wavelength or the polarization of the laser pulse. Furthermore, we present a quantitative explanation of the intensity window in which all-optical helicity-dependent switching (AO-HDS) occurs, based on magnetic circular dichroism. This explanation is consistent with all the experimental findings on AO-HDS so far, varying from single- to multiple-shot experiments. The presented results give a solid understanding of the origin of AO-HDS, and give novel insights into the physics of ultrafast, laser controlled magnetism.

Spin}orbit induced magnetic phenomena in bulk metals and their surfaces and interfaces
First-principles electronic structure studies based on local spin density functional theory and performed on extremely complex simulations of ever increasingly realistic systems, play a very important role in explaining and predicting surface and interface magnetism. This review deals with what is a major issue for "rst-principles theory, namely the theoretical/computational treatment of the we...
متن کاملOptical and magneto-optical studies on magnetic-phase transition of CeSb and CeBi
We have observed the magnetic-phase transitions of CeSb and CeBi by a magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy in the infrared region. The phase boundary is similar to that detected by neutron scattering. The optical spectra re#ect the electronic structures in the ordered states. The electronic structure and also the origin of the magnetic transition are discussed. ( 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. ...
متن کاملAll-optical switching in granular ferromagnets caused by magnetic circular dichroism
Magnetic recording using circularly polarised femto-second laser pulses is an emerging technology that would allow write speeds much faster than existing field driven methods. However, the mechanism that drives the magnetisation switching in ferromagnets is unclear. Recent theories suggest that the interaction of the light with the magnetised media induces an opto-magnetic field within the medi...
متن کاملOrganic Chemical Applications of Magnetic Circular Dichroism*
Recent applications of magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy (the Faraday effect) in organic chemistry are reviewed. Magnetic optical activity is a universal property of all matter and consequently can be applied to optically active as well as optically inactive molecules. It is emphasized, however, that natural and magnetic optical activity have separate physical origins and the information...
متن کاملAll-optical magnetization switching in ferrimagnetic alloys: deterministic vs thermally activated dynamics
Using photo-emission electron microscopy with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism as a contrast mechanism, new insights into the all-optical magnetization switching (AOS) phenomenon in GdFe based rare-earth transition metal ferrimagnetic alloys are provided. From a sequence of static images taken after single linearly polarized laser pulse excitation, the repeatability of AOS can be measured with...
